At Wattle Street Dental, we focus on helping people reach their potential in holistic health and in life in Noosa Hinterland, Sunshine Coast area. Lots of our patients are interested in how to improve their oral health naturally. Our wonderful hygienist Adelle has compiled  this list to help you achieve your goals.

  1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling with coconut oil helps to remove toxins form the oral cavity. Not only does oil pulling help to relieve gingivitis it has many other benefits such as treating bad breath, reducing inflammation, whitening teeth, boosting the immune system and relieving headaches…. and the list goes on!

For maximum antifungal and antibacterial effects add clove and/or tea tree oil to the coconut oil. The best time to oil pull is in the morning. Gently swish the oils around your mouth for 5-20 minutes before brushing. Once you spit the oil out you can brush your teeth as normal.

  1. Using a natural toothpaste to mineralise the teeth

If you prefer to use a fluoride-free toothpaste, thankfully there are alternatives to help keep your teeth strong. Although there are many fluoride-free toothpaste options on the market you can make your own toothpaste at home economically.

Mix together:

4 tablespoons of coconut oil

2 tablespoons of aluminium free baking soda

20 drops of liquid trace minerals or (calcium and/or magnesium powder)

20 drops each of tea tree, clove and peppermint essential oils

1/8 teaspoon stevia

If you have apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in the morning, make sure you rinse your mouth out and neutralize with bicarb before brushing your teeth, because acid can soften up your enamel and make them more prone to damage.

  1. Supplements to support a healthy oral environment

Disclaimer: You should consult with your doctor before taking any medications or supplements.

Coenzyme Q10 (100 mg daily)
Can have a healing effect on gingivitis. Periodontal disease can be related to CoQ10 deficiency.

Recommended dose is 100mg daily.

Vitamin C

Helps strengthen gums and helps with healthy tissue formation & healing.

Recommended dose is 1000 mg 2x daily

Collagen

The organic components of the dentine, cementum and bone are made up of 90% of Type I collagen. Collagen can come from both plant and animal sources with grass-fed cattle have the highest content of Type 1 collagen.

It can help repair leaky gut which in turn helps the body to absorb nutrients efficiently.

Oral Probiotics

As probiotics are taken to improve gut health, oral Probiotics help improve the oral flora & reduce the bad bacteria which can cause inflammation (and gingivitis), bad breath and decay.

Recommended dose – look for a product with high-volume colony forming units (CFUs) and the best beneficial strains. Usually comes in the form of a lozenge or chewable tablet.

It might be worth doing a bioscreen test with you functional docor or naturopath to have an assessment of your gut health before taking any probiotics.

Calcium

calcium is the primary building block of our bones and teeth, and we also need it for proper teeth remineralization.

If you aren’t effectively absorbing calcium, it can be quickly rendered useless. Additionally, without also supplementing with certain other nutrients, calcium can easily run amuck and end up in the wrong places in your body. For the body to effectively absorb calcium & be delivered to the right area of our body it needs to be taken in combination with Vitamin D3 and K2. Recommended dose is 1000 mg’s

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is quite possibly one of the most important nutrients for overall health. Its name is misleading because vitamin D is actually more like a hormone than a vitamin, and because of this, there are receptors for vitamin D on every tissue and organ throughout your body.

Required to absorb calcium and balance minerals throughout the body which allows the body to repair bones and teeth and to maintain the tooth structure. We get less sunshine because we spend nearly all of our time indoors and we overuse sunscreen.

Recommended dose 1000 IU or more each day.

Vitamin K2

vitamin K2 should be taken with vitamin D because they work synergistically to improve calcium absorption and distribution. While Vitamin D3 is assists in absorption of calcium, vitamin K2  directs calcium to the right areas of the body.

vitamin helps repair dentine and helps to remineralise teeth.

Recommended dose is 90 micrograms

Magnesium

Helps to remineralise teeth & helps both body absorb calcium. However id f you have too much calcium, vitamin D or phosphorous  it can lower magnesium levels.

Recommended dose is  between 300- 400 mg’s
