Sunshine Coast Teeth Whitening Services

Wattle Street Dental provide a range of Sunshine Coast teeth whitening services including take-home kits as well as in-clinic treatments. Our take home-kits are ideal for people who want to whiten their teeth gradually and can also be used as a maintenance option on in-clinic services. Our in-clinic treatment is a fast and pain-free process that is great for anyone who has a big event coming up and would like to have a brighter, whiter smile.

For more information about our Sunshine Coast teeth whitening services or to book an appointment, please get in touch with the team at Wattle Street Dental today on 07 54477669.

Take Home Teeth Whitening Kit:

Take home kits produce similar effects as in the chair whitening, but at a reduced cost. Specialised whitening gel is placed in an exact mould of your teeth, allowing you to perform whitening in the comfort of your own home. After receiving the mould, you’ll need to wear it one hour per day for two weeks. From there, topping up your teeth with whitening gel every six months or as required will keep them looking great. Our take home kits use specialised gel that is safe to use with sensitive teeth.

In-Clinic Teeth Whitening Services:

Have a special event coming up and want to look a million dollars? Book an in the chair teeth whitening appointment and have our team get your teeth looking absolutely stunning. Whitening appointments with our hygienist produce amazing results quicker than the take home whitening kits, making them a perfect option for last minute whitening before an important event.

After you’ve had your whitening done, we’ll give you a take home kit with top up gel so you can maintain your whitened teeth. As in-clinic whitening uses much stronger gels to whiten your teeth more quickly, it sometimes isn’t suited to patients with sensitive teeth. Call us on 07 54477669 or book a whitening appointment online and have a discussion with our friendly team to see whether professional whitening or a take home kit would be better suited to your teeth.

Whitening for Life Program:

Your teeth might look a million dollars, but it’s important that they stay in great shape to prevent costly and painful dental problems. As part of our Whitening for Life program, we provide free top up gel for use in your take home kit when you book in an appointment with the hygienist every six months.

Veneers and Crowns

Dental Veneers and Crowns Sunshine Coast

Wattle Street Dental are a Cooroy-based dental clinic providing comprehensive dentistry services including dental veneers and crowns. Our team of experienced staff, paired with our access to state-of-the-art equipment ensures that we can offer a fast, affordable and long-lasting solution for all our clients. Visit our smile gallery to see some before and after examples of our previous work.

If you would like more information about our dental veneers and crowns, please get in touch on 07 54477669 to book an appointment.

Dental Veneers:

We use a skilled local laboratory to produce durable veneers of the highest quality for our clients. Our diligent process includes taking photos of each individual tooth to ensure a consistent smile – each tooth will naturally be a different shade, and we factor this in when making veneers to ensure you get the look you’re after. Veneers are a great cosmetic option for patients with healthy gums and teeth. They can:

  • Hide gaps
  • Change tooth colour
  • Cover up cracks
  • Alter tooth shape

Our planning and design process for dental veneers is extensive and thorough. Not all veneers are made alike, so we make sure that you get exactly what you’re after. Are you after a more natural white look or a ‘Hollywood’ type look? To ensure the perfect shade is achieved, we can put together a temporary mould for you to test before the veneers permanently applied.

Crowns:

Our crowns undergo the same professional diligence that our veneers are subject to and are produced with high quality materials to ensure durability. Crowns are available for a single tooth or the whole mouth, with one-day crowning available for single tooth procedures. We’re capable of changing the appearance of alignment, colour, shape and more. Crowns cover the entirety of a tooth, compared with veneers, which just cover the front, making crowns a better option for patients with more than simple cosmetic issues.

We can create some temporary moulds for you as well, so that you can test the fit and feel of your new dental crowns before we apply them permanently. This allows you to have more of a say over the shape and appearance of your new crowns, ensuring that you are comfortable and happy with their visual appearance.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Teeth Straightening

Sunshine Coast Dentistry and Teeth Straightening Services

Wattle Street Dental provide Sunshine Coast dentistry and teeth straightening services for the whole family including adults. We have an experienced team of almost 20 staff including qualified dentists, oral hygienists and customer service staff all based at our Cooroy clinic.

We offer all our clients:

  • Options to suit most budgets
  • Comprehensive solutions
  • Free whitening at the end of braces treatment
  • Relaxing environment
  • Payment plans available

We perform a comprehensive analysis of your existing teeth to ensure the right solution for your teeth is chosen. In addition to tailoring a solution for the layout of your teeth, we’ll look at oral health practices that could further improve outcomes, such as your cleaning habits, breathing habits and more. We care about the long-term health of your teeth and provide solutions to minimise pain and discomfort.

Traditional Braces

Our Damon brace solutions use ceramic or metal brackets on each of your teeth to gradually straighten them. Our braces use CuNiTi (Copper-chromium-nickel-titanium) wire, which improves the efficiency of treatments and reduces some of the initial pain felt immediately after installation. CuNiTi wire has the benefit of reducing tension under cold temperatures. One popular way our patients relieve some of the initial pain is to occasionally wash their mouth with icy cold water.

Invisalign:

Invisalign uses a clear removable mould, designed to be worn for most of the day, which gradually straightens and aligns teeth. Invisalign is a perfect stealth solution for those who want to improve their teeth without the look of braces. Moulds get replaced every few weeks as your teeth shift, and treatment periods are usually shorter, but this ultimately depends on your teeth and how often the mould is worn.

With all the great things that Invisalign can do, it’s important to consider that it isn’t the best solution for everyone. Patients requiring extensive re-alignment and shifting of the root are often better suited to traditional braces. If we establish Invisalign isn’t the best solution for your teeth, there are still some stealthy ways to partially hide your braces, such as through clear ceramic brackets on a wired installation.

Braces for Children:

Most procedures are generally less invasive, painful and costly when performed early on. One option available to younger children is the Myobrace system, which doesn’t require any fixed bracing. Instead, Myobrace is an orthodontic appliance encouraging nose breathing and other habits that improve jaw development and keep teeth straight.

Nervous Patients:

Naturally, some patients get nervous about the thought of going to the dentist, and we do our best to accommodate your needs and create a relaxing environment that you can feel comfortable coming to. If this means putting on Netflix or TV on the monitor above, or stopping for breaks, that’s what we’ll do. Our friendly team love a chat and we’ll do everything we can to take your mind off the dental procedure and instil confidence.

Sleep Apnoea

Sunshine Coast Sleep Apnoea Treatment

Wattle Street Dental provide Sunshine Coast sleep apnoea treatment and services. Did you know over 40% of the population aged 60 over have sleep apnoea?  Sleep apnoea problems can range in severity but can often lead to long-term health problems such as strokes , heart attack, diabetes, depression or insomnia. Our team of experienced professionals can work with you to determine if your apnoea is caused by a dental, frenulum or related issue and create a tailored treatment plan to help you.

For more information, please get in touch with our Sunshine Coast clinic on 07 54477669.

Importance of Sleep Apnoea Prevention:

Sleep apnoea is a condition whereby you stop breathing during sleep, preventing flow of oxygen to the brain for short periods. It’s incredibly common among older adults, with prevalence estimated to be up to 50% depending on age and gender. Often, sleep apnoea is either not recognised or simply diagnosed as ‘mild’ and therefore not worth treating. The problem with this is that sleep apnoea has drastic effects on your long-term health, and mild sleep apnoea can be easily treatment with an oral appliance and prevent it become severe sleep apnoea.

Failing to treat sleep apnoea can result in:

  • Shorter lifespan
  • Strokes
  • Increased hypertension headaches
  • Insomnia

Sleep apnoea is prevalent amongst snorers and is a common cause for morning headaches and general drowsiness throughout the day.

Comprehensive Sleep Apnoea Solutions

There are many ways that sleep apnoea symptoms can be caused, and we’re incredibly diligent in our analysis to ensure no time and money is wasted in effectively treating your apnoea. Sometimes, after a consultation and review of x-rays and the mouth, we may find it necessary to refer your problem to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Many sleep apnoea issues are caused by dental problems, but sometimes there’s nasal problems that may need further attention from a different specialist.

Tongue Tie Treatment:

One common procedure to remove the symptoms of sleep apnoea is to treat tongue tie. The tongue tie, or frenulum, usually develops to allow for proper placement of the tongue behind your top row of teeth, against the roof of your mouth. However, when this doesn’t occur, a number of symptoms can persist, including:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Drooling
  • Improper jaw alignment
  • Lisp and speaking problems

Mouth breathing is a common cause of sleep apnoea and if you’ve ever found yourself dribbling when you wake up or often wake up with a headache, this is a sign that you may have mild sleep apnoea. If you have difficulties placing your tongue in the correct spot comfortably, can’t place your tongue outside of the lip, or have trouble swallowing, it is possible that your apnoea is caused by a restrictive tongue tie. Treatment results in little pain and is quite easy to perform. See our page on tongue tie release for more information.

Tongue Tie

Sunshine Coast Tongue Tie Release Treatment

Wattle Street Dental are a Sunshine Coast dental clinic offering a range of specialist services including tongue and lip tie release treatment for adults, children and infants.

Tongue tie in children and infants can cause eating, sleeping, behavioural and speech development problems as well as jaw development and muscle issues.

If left untreated, the issues can lead to many dental issues such as malocclusion (poorly positioned teeth) and tooth decay, It may also lead to airways issues such as sleep apnoea in adults.

If you would like to learn more about tongue ties and how yours could be effecting your overall health, please book a consultation with Wattle Street Dental – call 07 54477669.

Why Release Mine, my child’s or my babies Tongue Tie?

Tongue tie problems resulting in poor jaw structure and teeth alignment are usually identified quite early on, but adults may find themselves suffering from back, neck and shoulder pain, headaches/ migraines or sleep apnoea when their tongue isn’t able to be placed in the right spot. If you have a short restricted tongue tie, or short frenulum, your tongue may not be able to be comfortably placed loosely behind your top row of teeth, against the palate which can lead to such issues.

Tongue Tie treatment can aid in the relief/resolution of some of the following issues:

  • Low tongue posture
  • Swallowing problems
  • Speech difficulties and lisping
  • Sleep apnoea and mouth breathing
  • Dribbling
  • Feeding issues
  • Postural issues

Infancy and Breastfeeding with a tongue tie:

Some mothers manage to cope with some or all of the issues that surround their infants oral restrictions by compensation. This can be done through postural and positional changes or simply by pushing past the pain and just dealing with it.

These ways of compensating aren’t ideal and are very impactful on the success of your breastfeeding journey. Compensating for poor function of the tongue and even lip may not last the entirety of your breastfeeding journey. You may find these compensatory behaviours may not get you past the first few months.

Once breastmilk is purely demand driven instead of hormone driven, you and your baby may struggle to reach weight gaining recommendations, your supply may drop and you could struggle to meet the feeding needs of your baby.

Some common Signs of Infant Tongue/Lip tie include

  • Poor latch/inability to latch
  • Sliding off the nipple
  • Fatigue during feeds
  • Irritability while feeding
  • Poor weight gain
  • Clicking during a feed
  • Dribbling milk at the breast/ bottle
  • Digestive issues (such as increased gassiness, reflux, colic, vomiting, distended stomach)
  • Maternal nipple pain/ damage (feels like the infant is compressing, chewing, gumming, pinching the nipple)
  • Increased maternal nipple/ breast infection
  • Compromised maternal milk supply

Tongue ties don’t just stop at infancy, It isn’t something you just ‘grow’ out of. There are lifelong issues that can be a result of oral restrictions well beyond infancy and breastfeeding. Which means early intervention is preferred if it can be diagnosed early on into life.

Compensation habits during breastfeeding set up bad habits for life, they can all manifest into other issues across your child’s life. It’s extremely important to establish good function of the tongue as early as possible. ‘Just getting by’ or ‘Managing’ is not ideal for the long term function and habits of your child.

Tongue Tie In Adults And Children:

As with infancy tongue ties come with various implications. In children you may see predominant mouth breathing, sleep disordered breathing, speech impediments, behavioural issues and dental problems. These issues then follow on into adulthood causing other issues such as frequent headaches/ migraines, digestive issues, sleep apnoea, back, neck and shoulder pains and TMJ issues due to poor dental alignment.

It’s important to note that tongue tie releases aren’t for everyone, and getting it done on a whim won’t guarantee results. We’ll go through a thorough consultation with you asking many questions that may seem irrelevant to the mouth but are very common symptoms of tongue restriction, we will look at how your jaw sits and discuss any sleep apnoea or breathing issues before we conclude whether a tongue tie treatment would result in improvements for you. Before a tongue tie release, we’ll require you to do some short 5-minute tongue exercises twice a day to ensure your tongue has adequate strength to move your tongue around correctly after the surgery and that the frenum doesn’t re-attach with restriction.

Is it Painful?

Tongue tie release procedures are much less painful than they used to be. Rather than simply cutting the tie with scissors or a scalpel like it used to be done, we perform tongue tie removal using laser techniques ( Waterlase). This minimises any swelling and bleeding, thus reducing pain and recovery time, all while being much safer than the traditional technique. Tongue tie release will not be pain free, it will be uncomfortable to some degree after the numbness wears off, but most of our patients report a two or three on a 1-10 pain scale, with the pain completely gone within a couple days.

As for babies and children under 3, numbing would not be given. The procedure would be only a minute or two, and would allow for the infants to be able to feed immediately after the treatment settling them and calming them down.

Nervous Patients:

It’s not uncommon for some patients to have a fear of going to the dentist, especially if they haven’t been in a while. We understand this and we do our best to make a comfortable environment that you want to return to. We’ll do everything we can to get your mind off the procedure, including stopping for breaks, showing Netflix or TVshows on the monitor, essential oils or just having a friendly chit chat while we do what’s necessary.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

General Consultations

Sunshine Coast Children’s Dentist

Wattle Street Dental employ children’s dentists who specialise in infants, children and teenagers at our Sunshine Coast clinic. Our team carries a firm belief in stopping dental problems early on to improve jaw development for your children. We also do our best to make the surrounding environment as comfortable and non-intimidating as possible to instil confidence in future dental visits.

Please give us a call on 07 54477669 to discuss our children’s dental services in more detail.

Comprehensive Oral Health Strategy:

As experienced dentists and oral hygiene professionals, we understand that poor tooth health comes down to a lot more than dentist visits and teeth cleaning. We care about the long-term oral health of your kids rather than relying on fillings and procedures to fix problems as they occur. With every oral health check up on children, we’re focused on ensuring that any undesirable habits are being stopped at the start.

Things we look at and inquire about include:

  • Jaw development
  • Sleep habits – is there snoring or dribbling?
  • Mouth breathing habits
  • Infant feeding habits
  • Biting habits and alignment

We’ll obviously look at cleaning habits, but it’s also important to consider your children’s oral health in a holistic approach to minimise problems, costs and discomfort further down the line. Professional, Tailored Advice:

We’re here to provide tailored and professional advice, and to answer any questions you’ve got about your child’s oral health. For example, one common misconception is that baby tooth health isn’t of huge concern, because they just fall out anyway. This is untrue; having baby teeth fall out prematurely via tooth decay can cause crowding out and tooth development problems when adult teeth start to come in.

Our team are here to help, and we encourage all parents to ask us as many questions as possible, no matter how complex or mundane, to ensure healthy teeth for their children. If you’d like to better understand the complexities of some of the dental problems your child may be facing, we’ve got a small library of helpful books that parents are free to borrow and return.

Toddler Dental Check-up:

Bring your infant in for a fun little sit down with our children’s dentist; we’ll do a quick check up of your child to ensure everything is going ahead as planned. If you’d like, we can even do this when you’re in for a check-up or clean on your own teeth!

We’re are equipped with state-of-the-art 3d milling technology to make accurate ceramic fillings in-house, reducing the time and costs of having fillings and restorations.

For more information about our kid’s dentist our full range of services, please get in touch with Wattle Street Dental on 07 54477669.

Filling Options:

Our filling options include plastic resin and long-term, more durable ceramic fillings. Plastic fillings are a fantastic option for most children, as tooth decay isn’t too substantial. Ceramic fillings are a longer lasting option that we 3D mill in-house from scans of the mouth. Ultimately, we’ll recommend the best option for your child based on the extent of the damage, their age and your budget. We’ll also evaluate whether there are behaviours or oral health habits likely to be causing tooth decay that need addressing.

We use an advanced computer-controlled numbing system that slowly injects local anaesthetic with a smaller needle, so your children don’t feel the numbing process and aren’t intimidated by a large needle. Further, ceramic fillings can be scanned, made and fitted on the same day using our state of the art technology; ceramic filling procedures at dental facilities without this equipment can take up to two weeks while the filling is made at an external laboratory.

Comfortable Environment:

We understand that going to the dentist can be a daunting experience for many children and even some adults. To counteract this, our dental office environment is upbeat and friendly, and we do as much as we can to minimise the pain and scariness of dental work for children. Some of the things we do to make the dental experience more enjoyable for children include:

  • Putting Netflix or TV on the monitor
  • Having friendly chats with them instead of just mum and dad
  • Stopping and asking how they’re feeling
  • Seeking alternative ways (e.g. happy gas)
  • Essential oil diffusion

We pride ourselves on making dental procedures as gentle as possible. This is especially important when working with children to instil confidence in going to the dentist and keeping their teeth clean. Naturally, all fillings and restorations come with a numbing agent unless requested otherwise.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Early Childhood & Interceptive Dental Programs

Sunshine Coast Interceptive Dental Programs

Wattle Street Dental provide comprehensive early childhood interceptive dental programs on the Sunshine Coast. We understand the importance of early dental intervention and offer a range of tailored interceptive programs for children to prevent common dental problems from occurring. Having straight teeth with no breathing, speaking or eating problems ensures a comfortable development into adulthood without expensive dental surgery further down the track.

Give us a call on 07 54477669 or book an appointment online to organise a consultation.

Jaw Development:

For many parents, misaligned jaw development during childhood can seem like a case of genetics, and to an extent this is true. However, it is possible to intercept problems early on to prevent alignment and tooth development issues down the track. Unlike later in life, jaw development and mouth structure can be easily changed without surgery during childhood. Things like overbites, crooked teeth, crowded mouths and nasal breathing problems can be addressed in a number of ways, including physical and behavioural adjustments, such as:

  • Changing breathing behaviour
  • Changing eating habits
  • Myobrace
  • Inserting plates
  • Braces

Eating and oral health behaviour plays a big part in jaw and teeth development. By stopping problems before they begin, your children will be off to a great start in ensuring comfortable, healthy and beautiful teeth for a lifetime. During a consultation, we’ll discuss dietary and cleaning habits as well as take a thorough analysis of your child’s mouth to identify areas that can be improved.

Simple things like encouraging breathing through the nose with proper use of the diaphragm ensures that teeth and jawlines develop properly. It’s important to remember that braces do a fantastic job of straightening teeth, but they don’t address the reason why teeth are like that in the first place, and a two-step solution with behavioural alterations plus physical alterations (such as braces or plates) is a better way to address crooked teeth problems.

Myobrace

Myobrace is a removable device that corrects mouth breathing habits, ensures arches develop properly and that teeth are aligned correctly. Don’t be put off by the name; Myobrace does not require physical bracing as it is meant to correct behaviours before adult teeth come through. After Myobrace treatment is done, we use retainers to keep the teeth aligned properly and assess after adult teeth have come through whether bracing will be necessary. For more information on Myobrace treatment, read our page about Myobraces to see if they’d be right for your child.

Braces:

If all of the above has been corrected properly, braces is largely unnecessary other than to ensure perfect, straight teeth for cosmetic reasons. Once all adult teeth have come through, we’ll assess whether your child’s teeth would benefit from braces. To learn more about the bracing options we have available, visit our page on braces.

Myobrace

Sunshine Coast Myobrace Provider

Wattle St Dental are skilled dental professionals providing Sunshine Coast Myobrace treatments, improving early jaw development. Dr Wei Shen has learned the principles of myofunctional dentistry from two experts in the field, Dr German Ramirez-Yanez and Dr John Flutter, and understands how to safely and comfortably address key early behaviour problems that cause speaking, breathing and swallowing problems in children.

Please give us a call on 07 54477669 to discuss our Myobrace services or book in an appointment for a consultation regarding our early childhood dental services.

Why Use Myobrace?

Myobrace orthodontic appliances look like mouthguard. Despite being ‘braces’, they aren’t fixed like traditional braces and are recommended to be used before adult teeth develop. Myobrace ensures the full potential of your child’s jaw development is realised. Jaw development and mouth structure can be easily changed or trained without surgery in children – this becomes more difficult as they become older. While jaw composure does have a lot to do with genetics, it is possible to intercept problems early on to prevent alignment problems and tooth development problems down the track.

The first two stages of a Myobrace treatment focus on gum and jaw alignment. This mitigates breathing, speaking, sleeping and cosmetic problems later in life. It also reduces the chance of sleep apnoea or diseases caught by breathing through the mouth.

How Myobrace Works

Myobrace treatments have four stages:

  1. Habit correction: This involves making sure the tongue is placed in the correct spot (loosely placed behind the top row of teeth, against the palate), ensuring breathing through the nose and correct swallowing practices. Habit correction also makes sure that the lips are closed when not eating or speaking, whilst the two rows of teeth are still separated. Problems like overbites and open mouths are removed at this stage.
  2. Arch development: During this stage, orthodontic appliances are used over time to align the two rows of teeth correctly and widen the arches to a shape that will accommodate the tongue and all teeth comfortably. Having this done early prevents overcrowding of teeth, breathing problems and discomfort placing the tongue in the correct spot.
  3. Dental alignment: As the last adult teeth are developing, the Myobrace for Teens aligns teeth into their proper place. This does require wearing the Myobrace throughout the day and while sleeping, and for some patients, traditional bracing may be a better suited option.
  4. Retainment: Just like a fixed bracing procedure, teeth are held in place with retainers after a Myobrace treatment to keep them looking and feeling great for longer. Retainers are removable and usually only require use at night time.

Professional, Friendly Environment:

Our dental office environment is upbeat and friendly, and we do as much as we can to minimise the pain and scariness of dental work for children. The Myobrace technology doesn’t require a fixed brackets like traditional braces, but we still work closely with your children to ensure they aren’t at all intimidated by them. If you’d like to learn more about the importance of early jaw development for your children, we’re more than happy to lend you some books on the subject to improve awareness.
