Tongue Tie / Lip tie Release

Sunshine Coast Tongue Tie Treatment

Wattle Street Dental are a Sunshine Coast dental clinic providing tongue tie treatment for children. Tongue tie can cause many problems in infants and children relating to eating, breathing and speaking; strain on different muscles and jaw joints can also lead to expensive dental complications later in life. Our experienced team use the latest practices and most advanced gentle laser ( Waterlese ) to treat tongue tie problems, ensuring a faster and less painful recovery for your child.

For more information or to book an appointment, please contact Wattle Street Dental on  07 54477669.

Why Release the Tongue Tie?

Normally, the lingual frenulum doesn’t need to be released. However, for a small number of patients with tight lingual frenulum or tongue ties, it can prevent them from placing their tongue in the correct place behind their top row of teeth. This causes problems further down the line with mouth breathing and strain on the jaw joint and muscles. Releasing the tongue tie allows the tongue to move to its proper place comfortably. During infancy, a short frenulum can also cause problems with breastfeeding.

Effective Solutions:

The problem with the conventional way of snipping tongue ties is that there’s usually a fair amount of pain for a few days, meaning children won’t want to lift their tongue up behind their top row of teeth. By the time they feel comfortable, the tongue tie may have grown back and inhibited the proper use of the tongue again, resulting in a waste of time and money. Our tongue tie releases use exercises and laser releasing rather than snipping to minimise pain and ensure the effectiveness of the procedure.

When you come to us for an initial consultation, we’ll show you and your child fun little ways to exercise the frenulum and get it in a strong state ready to be released. Similarly, after it has been released, we’ll encourage these exercises for the month following to ensure the tongue stays in the correct spot. The tongue tie exercises we’re talking about here aren’t intense sessions, they’re merely quick 5-minute activities to do once or twice a day.

Nervous Patients:

We understand that going to the dentist can be a daunting experience for many children and even some adults. To counteract this, our dental office environment is upbeat and friendly, and we do as much as we can to minimise the pain and scariness of dental work for children. Some of the things we do to make the dental experience more enjoyable for children include:

  • Putting Netflix or TV on the monitor
  • Having friendly chats with them instead of just mum and dad
  • Stopping and asking how they’re feeling
  • Seeking alternative ways (e.g. happy gas) to make the procedure gentle
  • Essential oil diffusion

Modern frenulum removal procedures are much more gentle than they used to be, with minimal swelling reported from patients. If you’d like to learn more about the tongue tie release procedure, its affects, or any other dental procedures for your children, we encourage you to borrow from a small library of books we have. We’re here to encourage oral health for your family every step of the way.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Sunshine Coast Braces

Wattle Street Dental provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive and affordable dentistry services on the Sunshine Coast. We have a team of highly qualified and experienced dentists who specialise in correcting alignment issues with children’s teeth using braces. Book an initial consultation at our Cooroy clinic to discuss the range options that are available – call 07 54477669.

Visit our smile gallery to see some before and after photos from clients we have worked with previously.

Available Brace Options:

We use Damon braces with CuNiTi wire to minimise pain and speed up the treatment process. In our experience, we’ve found Damon braces to be fantastic for children and adult brace treatments. They don’t require elastic loops and there’s a lot less friction, resulting in less pain.

Brace bracket options include:

  • Coloured ceramic
  • Clear ceramic
  • Metal

Generally, coloured ceramic is a popular choice amongst children, and having the option for a colour change each time brackets are changed is a great, albeit small way to make the experience a bit more exciting.

Other options available include Invisalign braces, which are clear aligners that look similar to retainers, designed to adjust teeth more discretely. Alternatively, if treating dental problems early on, we can tackle alignment problems before adult teeth even start to appear with the Myobrace system. Myobrace doesn’t require fixed braces at all and by ensuring proper tongue placement and nose breathing, better jaw development and alignment is achieved in childhood.

Comprehensive Treatment Plan:

At the consultation, we’ll perform an extensive evaluation of your child’s teeth, taking plenty of measurements and photos before putting together a plan to show you at the second visit. Existing patients of ours get free access to the consultation within a month of their last visit. X-rays will need to be obtained between the two visits, and we’re happy to refer you to a trusted local radiographer.

From there, we’ll have our second visit with some quotes on different treatment options available, plus an outline of some of the retainer options available. Many patients prefer fixed retainers, but depending on the structure of the jaw, perfectly aligned teeth may chip away at the top adhesive. Removable retainers are available in such scenarios, which are clear pieces of acrylic moulded perfectly to fit your teeth for wear at night time.

Preventing Pain:

We pride ourselves on making the dental procedure less painful and intimidating for our patients, especially children, as it encourages better dental health practices throughout life. Although braces don’t hurt while equipped, they can certainly hurt just after the installation. Braces don’t usually start hurting until a few hours after the installation procedure and the pain can persist for a couple days after the procedure. We’ve begun using a special type of wire called CuNiTi (Copper-chromium-nickel-titanium) in brace installations. In addition to treatment efficiency benefits, it has the added benefit of removing some of the initial pain.

Previously, dentists recommended chewing gum to keep the blood flowing around the gums, but with this new type of wire, the tension can be softened with cold temperatures. After the installation, we’ll recommend a number of ways to mitigate the initial pain, but one popular way to minimise pain is to wash icy cold water in the mouth in the initial days after installation.

Hygiene Appointments

The hygiene department at Wattle Street Dental provide a range of services including general scale and clean visits to treating gum disease. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive oral hygiene evaluations which focus on preventative measures. Our team do their best to make the entire process less intimidating for nervous patients, encouraging good oral hygiene habits for a lifetime.

Give us a call on 07 54477669 to speak to one of our friendly team or book an appointment online.

Comprehensive Hygiene Assessment:

Our Oral Hygienists are incredibly thorough in their work, performing fantastic analysis of your teeth and gums to prevent problems in the long-term. In addition to giving you that amazing freshly-cleaned feeling, they’ll ensure there’s no visible problems, such as filling cracks, cavities or tooth decay. Getting your teeth cleaned regularly is a great opportunity to discuss cleaning habits and stop bad behaviours, such as hard abrasive brushing, before they become serious issues.

We extend our general advice beyond the basic, because we care about the long-term comfort and health of your teeth. While inspecting and cleaning, we’ll evaluate the surrounding oral environment of your mouth to identify problem areas that are going unnoticed. For example, mouth breathing causes dried out areas of the mouth, resulting in bacteria problems, and if treated early, expensive dental procedures could be mitigated later in life.

Comfortable Environment:

Our dentists and oral hygiene staff do their best to make dental appointments more comfortable for patients who are a little nervous. Some of the things we do to make the experience less distressing for our patients include:

  • Ceiling-mounted TV
  • Comfortable conversation
  • Applying local anaesthesia
  • Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas) or twilight sedation if needed.
  • Essential oil diffusion to remove the “dental smell”

We want to accommodate to your needs, so please don’t hesitate to make a special request if you normally have trouble when going to the dentist.

Two of the most commonly used materials for filling a tooth are plastic resin and ceramic. Plastic filling is what is used often, and it suits many patients perfectly. It’s the cheapest option and takes a short time to do. Their downfall, however, is that they don’t provide structural support, but merely comfort and short term protection against further damage.

Ceramic fillings are recommended as a more long-term option or when more than 30-40% of the tooth needs to be filled. They’re shaped to fit your tooth exactly, provide structural support, and unlike plastic resin fillings, aren’t going to shrink over time. We’re equipped with 3D cameras and 3D milling machines to produce precise filling shapes quickly. Ceramic fillings used to take weeks to perform but we can now have one purpose-built and placed in less than a day.

Getting teeth crowned used to be a tedious procedure, as you had to wear uncomfortable temporary crowns while the permanent ones were being made. Today, we use 3D scanning technology and milling machines to produce perfect fitting, beautiful crowns. This allows us to scan, manufacture and place your crowns all on the same day. For more information on the crowning procedure, visit our page on crowns and veneers.

Our experienced dental surgeons make the tooth extraction process much more comfortable. Our extraction procedures are thorough and ensure that the health of the surrounding bone is maximised for less pain, minimal recovery time and better replacement outcomes. We use numbing in all tooth extractions to ensure minimal pain, and we offer a range of additional options to make the extraction process less intimidating, including the wand, happy gas, twilight sedation and more.

Once your problem tooth has been extracted we can look at implant and other tooth replacement procedures available. Visit our page on implants, dentures and other tooth replacements for more information.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Implants and Dentures

Sunshine Coast Dental Implants, Bridges & Dentures

Wattle Street Dental provide dental implants, bridges and dentures on the Sunshine Coast.  Tooth replacement is usually a last resort for patients, and we’re here to help you through what can be a stressful period. Our tooth replacement solutions use the latest in dental technology, ensuring a realistic look with a perfect, comfortable fit.

Tooth replacement procedures we offer to our patients include:

  • Dentures
  • Bridges
  • Implants

Different tooth replacement solutions may be better suited to your personal circumstances. We’ve listed some of the main pros and cons of the different procedures below – if you have any questions about which option is best suitable for you, please give us a call on 07 54477669.

Dentures are one of the cheapest tooth replacement treatments available and don’t require invasive surgery. Our team source the latest in dental technology to ensure our patients’ dentures look beautiful and realistic. Dentures are available in full and partial arrangements. Full dentures rest on your gums and palate (roof of your mouth), while partial dentures use a metal frame that attaches to your existing teeth.

Dentures require diligent care and attention; their lifespan will depend on your oral hygiene and any underlying health issues. The typical lifespan of dentures is between five and ten years, though it’s not unheard of to have dentures lasting much longer in patients with good oral hygiene habits. Leaving dentures in the mouth at night time promotes tooth decay and gum disease, so if you’re worried about pulling them out before bed every night, they may not be the best option for you.

Dental Bridges:

Bridging is a fantastic and realistic replacement option if there’s healthy teeth near your removed tooth. Bridging methods use your surrounding teeth to support an bridge tooth. Bridges look incredibly realistic and despite being attached to surrounding teeth, still look like individual pieces.

The downside is that your existing teeth need drilling to support the bridge tooth, which means you’ll need to visit the dentist more regularly and take extra care with your oral hygiene habits. Because of this, bridging isn’t usually recommended for younger patients who’ll need to take care of their teeth for longer. If looked after properly, bridges can last up to 20 years.

Dental Implants:

Implants are the best option, and their results speak for themselves. By implanting a fake root system into your jaw bone, we’re able to place realistic teeth that are supported by your mouth just like your original teeth. Implants look exactly like real teeth, and by being physically attached to your mouth bone structure, they feel exactly like real teeth when you’re chewing, flossing and cleaning.

As they require surgery, implants will cause some discomfort for weeks or possibly months following the procedure. Implants last the longest out of all available procedures, but like your original teeth, it’s important to take care of them to ensure they stay in good shape.

We use 3D X-ray and 3D printer to make stent to ensure the dental implant is placed with efficiency, minimal trauma and accuracy.

Choosing the Right Solution for You:

Still unsure what method would be right for you? Book in an appointment to see our friendly team of oral hygiene professionals. In addition to a complete oral health check up, we’ll have a serious discussion with you about the pros and cons of the different solutions available to you. Not all tooth replacement options are best suited to different lifestyles, health conditions and budgets. Because of this, we work closely with our patients to ensure they live comfortably with the best tooth replacement solution available to them.

Cooroy Dental Surgery

Wattle Street Dental are a Cooroy dental surgery with staff trained by international experts, providing comfortable and durable solutions. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of dental technology and are always looking for ways to make dental procedures less invasive and more comfortable for patients.

Give us a call on 07 54477669 or book an appointment online for a consultation with our friendly team.

Dental surgery procedures we provide include:

  • Gum grafting
  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Extraction and implants
  • Tongue tie lip tie release

To minimise the discomfort associated with surgical procedures and improve outcomes for patients, our dentists are regularly learning new ways to treat oral problems from industry experts all around the world. We also accommodate any special requests from our patients to create a comfortable environment for them. Dental surgery can seem intimidating, but it’s necessary to stop problems from getting worse, and we’re here to make the whole process less traumatic.

Wisdom Tooth Removal:

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, tend to cause problems in the late teens and early twenties, growing sideways and impacting other teeth, causing pain in the process. You might have been told to get your wisdom teeth removed as a preventative measure, regardless of if it causes pain. While we’re certainly willing to remove wisdom teeth as a preventative measure, our doctors will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether they are likely to be a problem at all.

Some people are lucky and have wisdom teeth that grow perfectly straight without causing any pain or discomfort, while others are extremely lucky and don’t have any third molars at all!

Wisdom teeth removal recovery times vary from patient to patient and are dependent on a number of factors, but our procedures are designed to minimise pain and complications such as dry socketing.

Extractions and Implants:

During a consultation with one of our experienced dentists, we’ll establish whether tooth extraction is necessary, or if you’ve already had extraction performed, we’ll discuss what kind of tooth replacement method would be best for you.

Replacement tooth options include:

  • Implants
  • Dentures
  • Bridges

Alternatively, if we think that your teeth are in a healthy enough state to not require extraction and dental implants, we may recommend restoration plus veneers or crowning to improve the cosmetic damage.

See our page on tooth replacements for more information on the options available.

Gum Grafting:

Dr Wei Shen has taken specialised gum grafting courses from industry experts in Europe. Gum grafting is necessary for patients with extremely recessed gum lines or lack of bone in key areas of the jaw. Dentists are seeing more cases of recessed gums from people who are brushing their teeth too hard out of fear of tooth decay. Gum grafting is a relatively straightforward procedure with short recovery times.

Tongue Tie Release:

Tongue ties, or the frenulum, are bits of skin attached to your tongue. Whilst tongue ties normally grow to accommodate a growing jaw, sometimes they stay too short and cause speaking and breathing problems, which may eventually result in misaligned jaws. Stopping this problem at the start is key for healthy jaw development in children. Procedures now use lasers coupled with tongue exercises to minimise pain and recovery times. Read more about our tongue procedures here.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
