Sunshine Coast Tongue Tie Treatment

Wattle Street Dental are a Sunshine Coast dental clinic providing tongue tie treatment for children. Tongue tie can cause many problems in infants and children relating to eating, breathing and speaking; strain on different muscles and jaw joints can also lead to expensive dental complications later in life. Our experienced team use the latest practices and most advanced gentle laser ( Waterlese ) to treat tongue tie problems, ensuring a faster and less painful recovery for your child.

Why Release the Tongue Tie?

Normally, the lingual frenulum doesn’t need to be released. However, for a small number of patients with tight lingual frenulum or tongue ties, it can prevent them from placing their tongue in the correct place behind their top row of teeth. This causes problems further down the line with mouth breathing and strain on the jaw joint and muscles. Releasing the tongue tie allows the tongue to move to its proper place comfortably. During infancy, a short frenulum can also cause problems with breastfeeding.

Effective Solutions:

The problem with the conventional way of snipping tongue ties is that there’s usually a fair amount of pain for a few days, meaning children won’t want to lift their tongue up behind their top row of teeth. By the time they feel comfortable, the tongue tie may have grown back and inhibited the proper use of the tongue again, resulting in a waste of time and money. Our tongue tie releases use exercises and laser releasing rather than snipping to minimise pain and ensure the effectiveness of the procedure.

When you come to us for an initial consultation, we’ll show you and your child fun little ways to exercise the frenulum and get it in a strong state ready to be released. Similarly, after it has been released, we’ll encourage these exercises for the month following to ensure the tongue stays in the correct spot. The tongue tie exercises we’re talking about here aren’t intense sessions, they’re merely quick 5-minute activities to do once or twice a day.

Nervous Patients:

We understand that going to the dentist can be a daunting experience for many children and even some adults. To counteract this, our dental office environment is upbeat and friendly, and we do as much as we can to minimise the pain and scariness of dental work for children. Some of the things we do to make the dental experience more enjoyable for children include:

  • Putting Netflix or TV on the monitor
  • Having friendly chats with them instead of just mum and dad
  • Stopping and asking how they’re feeling
  • Seeking alternative ways (e.g. happy gas) to make the procedure gentle
  • Essential oil diffusion

Modern frenulum removal procedures are much more gentle than they used to be, with minimal swelling reported from patients. If you’d like to learn more about the tongue tie release procedure, its affects, or any other dental procedures for your children, we encourage you to borrow from a small library of books we have. We’re here to encourage oral health for your family every step of the way.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Filling Options:

Our filling options include plastic resin (BPA free) and stainless steel crowns. Plastic fillings are a fantastic option for most children if the tooth decay isn’t too substantial. Stainless steel crowns are are a longer lasting option for more involved teeth or younger children who may struggle to sit still for long. Ultimately, we’ll recommend the best option for your child based on the extent of the damage and their age. We’ll also evaluate the habits that are likely to be causing tooth decay and teach you how to prevent future problems.

Fissure sealants are a thin white polymer coatings that fill the fissures (grooves) of the molars to protect the teeth from plaque and acids., Fissure sealants are effective in reducing the occurrence of tooth decay in hard to reach areas.
